Thanks for the additional info Rum,I had not actually used a Mahle because I got hold of a Mann (made in china LOL) whilst I was near ECP in Perth, amazing how such a simple little thing can be so complicated isn't it ?

Re: 1.4 16v Fuel Filter replacement
Hi LP You may be able to do a visual check under the car to confirm the reqd Part Number and type of filter fitted, the filter is just in front of the O/Side rear wheel,I checked under our car and was lucky to be able to actually read off the part number. If you have the same type as me (with 3x pipe...

Re: 1.4 16v Fuel Filter replacement
Now that you mention it - the old filter did have a removable valvey type thing on one end - perhaps the regulator ?

Re: 1.4 16v Fuel Filter replacement
I was lucky in that I could read the Mahle part number on the filter body and just ordered the direct equivalent, bloody awkward little job,I forgot to mention that I jacked up the car at the O/S rear which made it easier (or at least less tricky) for access.

Re: 1.4 16v Fuel Filter replacement
OK - done this afternoon :) Our car has the 3 x Fuel connector type, so it was just a case of... (1) Remove Fuse 41 (to disable fuel pump and to dissipate any fuel pressure in the fuel lines) (2) Start engine and wait for it to cut out (Fuel pump not running - therefore fuel pipe empties out - dissi...

1.4 16v Fuel Filter replacement
Finally getting round to changing our Fuel Filter on 2002 Polo 1.4 16v (new filter should arrive today). Other than removing the Fuse prior to diconnecting the fuel lines - any hints or tips ? I am still a little unclear on how to disconnect the fuel lines - squeeze the connector and then pull ? - i...

Re: Non-existent radio signal
You might need a signal booster/amplifier Bill (as well as the aerial signal amp).
ISTR that the original VW radios had a built in signal booster/amp.

Re: Losing coolant
Hi Bill Have you checked down behind the radiator - the fan switch sometimes starts to leak - the tell-tale will be if the switch and rad are stained with anti freeze. Sometimes one can just 'tweak' it up very gently.I think it is 27/29mm and I think I just tweaked mine by no more than 1/16th of a t...

Re: engine oil 5w 40 ??
Oh yes - the other thing I forgot to say Tim I always stick to the same brand of Oil Filter as the different brands can have a different size of 'Hex' - I usually use Mann filters -usually a good price if on 'special' at ECP although I sometimes buy online from ebay etc (sometimes carparts4less ? - ...

Re: engine oil 5w 40 ??
I use 5w40 in our 2002 1.4 16v Polo. I tend to avoid the Quantum stuff because it appears to make the engine slightly noisier mechanically.I have been mostly using the ECP TripleQX 5w40 and the engine seems happy enough on it (I usually do oil changes in Spring and Autumn - so @ approx 6/7,000 miles...

Re: headlight advice please
If the headlights have gone opaque - they can be polished up (if that is why they need changing) with loads of 'how to'guides online and on youtube, otherwise I am afraid I have not bought any recently.

Re: Occasional hot start problem
Yes I remember that leaning very far over the engine, maybe looking at things, then working by touch! Edit:- maybe interesting or not, but one of these suppliers listed for this part give it a suggested normal in service life of 3 years or 60,000kms - maybe that is a realistic service life for faul...

Re: Occasional hot start problem
Hi LP - yes I did get the parts from Autodoc,a little slow delivery because they originate from Germany (but not too bad delay),obviously you would need to cross check/confirm part number for your car.My breather Hose was also kernackered so got one at the same time.Definitely cut down our oil consu...
