check the hall sender unit, this failed on my MK2 and was only an intermittent fault so sometimes it ran and sometimes it didnt. In the end it died completely.

The gear linkage could have broken. This is the series of metal bars that connects the gear stick to the gear box, if its warped or damaged you will be unable to select certain gears and sometimes none at all.

I bet the door cards could be modified to find and work, theyre the same shape and size after all. Seen MK3 Ibiza interiors modified to fit MK2's, so i bet Polo's can be.

You'll need a laptop, a cable and a copy of VAG-COM.

Or you can go to the dealer but they will charge you a minimum of 30mins labour which could be as much as £30.

I'd go for about £1300 and be prepared to drop to £1200, the fact that its owed a service might put buyers off as they will think its going to be a big one as you havent had it done.

My guess would be the Heater Matrix also as this is where the heat from the engine bay enters the cabin.

Yeah they do get hot, but I have seen them colour coded to the body work before so as long as your prepare and paint them to a high standard they will withstand the heat

My best advice is to forget the engine, unless your going to go mad on cams and other major internals your going to see very little gain from the 1.4 engine, especially for the money. My advice would be to improve the handling so you pick up time in the corners

i also have a gearbox question.....my 1.0l 4 cylinder 1996 polo isnt very good on the motorway, thrashing it at 70mph doing well over 4000rpm. so im wondering whether a 1.4l gearbox will be a direct fit and are the ratio's better? i dont mind loosing some lower end omph as long as its better at hig...

Find a MK2 SEAT Ibiza or Cordy or MK1 arosa and swap the bulbs over with them, they have red ones. Should be one in a scrappy near you.

It could be a bad electrical connection on the clocks, or it could be that your temp sender and fuel sensor have both died together, the fuel guage on my MK4 often said i had less in than it did, just took it that the car was pessamistic.

Mine used to tick every now and again, its normally a sign that the oil isnt getting around the engine as well as it could and a sign that the oil and filter need changing. Also if the car is just doing short runs that will be why your batter has gone down, short runs, lots of stalling equals a dead...
