ipod nano air vent install

Post by part time hero »

i have been meaning to do this for a while but now i have finished uni for abit ,so i thought i will get on and do it

going to make this thread abit like a "how to" hopefully as i work out how to do it myself

i wanted to have the ipod controls near me when driving so i can swap songs etc

(this will only work with late spec 6n vents as they tilt up and down as i found out at my own expense lol)

tools needed
  • flat screw driver
  • drill
  • saw
  • glue
  • file
  • sand paper
Image
1. With a flat blade screw driver carefully pry the light control off.

Image
2. Pull the light panel clear

Image
3. then just wiggle the vent free

Image
Image
4.as you can see the new nano fits perfectly into the vent frame

Image
5. Taking the vents components apart there are 4 tabs(2 each side) on the sides push these in and pull them apart also take the mechanism apart

Image
6.take the fins out of housing simply bend the frame out slightly now everything should look like this

Image
7.measure up the ipod and itrip. i left a single vent at the bottem and made it flush at the top

Image
Image
8. drill a hole in the both sides and saw holes for the itrip to sit in as it is wider than the vent frame(the itrip becomes the stopper so the vent doesnt swing when you press the buttons on the ipod)

Image
Image
9.now that holes are cut the itrip sits nicely you need to measure up again

Image
10. but this time on the vent fins part and cut the section out should look like this

Image
Image
11. put it back together and glue the itrip in place and put it all in the car and it looks something like this.

Image
12. and when i leave the car it looks like this

there is still a few things i want to modify but thats the basics what do you think??

This is an awesome mod. Can it still be done on the earlier spec with the vents that move side to side ?

Do you reckon this could be modified to work with an iPhone? Also does it charge the iPod as well? Great little DIY mod that no one else has thought of.
