with enough force it will just come off (as when they get knocked they fall off sometimes)
to stick it back on there are a special glue, it used a fibreglas pad and u glue that to the window and stick the mirror to the firbreglass part, and baisicaly bonds it all together, pretty cheap and efficient. (think its fibreglass.)

Woooooo woo don't just pull it.
This happens..
Turn it anitclockwise, and it'll come off nicely. No need to stick it back on with anything, just turn it anticlockwise and it clips back on

Put a cloth round where it joins the screen, then grip it with a pair of pipe pliers give it half a turn and it will come off.

They should've made the mirror black to start with IMO, makes so much difference.

That's because some people just yank at it. Simply turn the mirror anti-clockwise and it will come of on it's own accord.
Black mirrors for replacements: 6N, Lupo and I think mark 3 golf?
There are tonnes more.
