Known/common faults

Post by polo2k »

i have decided that since cars do eventually go wrong , and quite often a lot of people may ghet a similar problem so if youi have a fault that you think may have been a common fault then please tell us.
all that i ask is that we try and keep this reasonably on topic so that if somebody is having a problem they dont have to scroll through 5 pages of chat to find it*
and also
please to aid searching please try and make it clear what the problem is/was
eg
Spark plug failure
fault occoured during hard driving at high revs causing loss of power, missfire and check engine light
remidy
replace spark plugs
notes
ngk platinum plugs were fitted and resisted failure

I know mine's a GTi, but here's a list of the problems I've had (and I know they are common faults):

* Ignition Barrel Failed
* Pedal Box Cracked/Clutch Cable Frayed/Clutch Plate Knackered
* Gearbox Noisy
* Rear Washerjet Pipe Split, causing damage to the boot lock electrics

That's it. I hope I don't get any more problems as the car runs out of warranty next month :?

Only fault I've had so far was an oil pressure sensor. Warning light kept coming on intermittently for low oil pressure.

Replaced under VW warranty after two attempts.

On my MK5 the Ignition barrel failed after a week. Do I win?? :wink:
Then they refitted the steering wheel *slightly* off centre. Ughhh.

Oh! Don't get me started on the allignment of steering wheels... I've given up!

On my 6N I took it back about 5 times until they got it nearly right. :cry:

My 6N2 has a very slight skew to the left.

speed sensor on one of the rear wheels was faulty, which made the ABS light keep coming on! quite happily changed by our friendly vee-dub garage for a mere £91! HOW MUCH????? :shock:

put rear washer pipe back on at 20k. and had to replace boot lock becuase the water had damaged it. the dashboard light has never worked since.

rear brakes/handbrake squeeching and grinding from about 4k now at 30k they have seized 2x. in between various vw garages have carried out work on the brake system 15x.

I never got mine sorted out. :evil:

A couple of people seem to have had the brake switch go.

If your break light a on all the time this is whats wrong, not expensive to fix.

Few screws to remove panel above pedals. Its at the top of the break pedal.
