So a whining 5th gear is a timebomb? It's not like it will just get louder in time, it means it can simply self destruct any time?

Yes, you need to get it fixed. If the 5th gear fails, itll end up coming through the bell housing and its bye bye gearbox

Ours is only slightly noisy but in most gears I think, certainly not just 5th.
You can get bearing kits off Fleabay from 92 quid, can't comment on quality or life cycle.
How hard is a home gearbox rebuild?
I spoke to a local gearbox place and he said if it's just the 'lower bearing'? then 125 quid with labour if I pull the box out.

You need a press to get the bearings out. It's a specialist job unfortunately.

For a full rebuild it's about £450
