Sounds like the synchromesh in the gearbox is worn out on those gears

The answer is to get the gearbox rebuilt I'm afraid

You can. The ratios may be a little different but not by much :)

Hi sorry for being so super questiony but I've been offered a gti gearbox that be better than putting in the 8v one in egh. I know the gti one was recently rebuilt. The 8v is 90,000 miles old.

The ratios are different again on the GTI box

Whilst it'll fit it'll throw your acceleration.

Being a 16v though it'll be bearable

Alex you are a star.

What do you think is the better gear box option?

I could change the intake manifold and throttle body to the gti one too. I think they are a straight swap for a couple o bhp!?!?

Though I'm no sure :)

The 8V box is a closer match as yours being a 75bhp is better suited to a lower ratio box. The GTI box may cause acceleration issues in first and second.

As for the TB and Intake, yes you could but it's minimal gain on the 75 block

Braw I'll stick the 8v in then. I might have a bash at reconditioning the 16v box as a wee messy project.

ta sir :)

Hi so I'm tackling the swap over this week 8vgearbox into 16v.

I'll loose a bit top speed but can you change over the 5th gear!?

I believe you can get to 5th easy as its at the opposit end to the bell/clutch end. behind the plate close to the passenger side wheel?? Is this feasible!? Anyone done it!?

Probably best not to mess with the gearbox if it works ok TBH
