Rear discs and Pads
Rear discs and Pads
Hello all, I'm needing to do the rear discs and pads on the car, 6n2 Polo GTi 2000 on an X plate. I've read on a couple forums that you need a 'special tool' to do the rears, might seem like a stupid question but what is the tool required, is it for winding back the piston or something?
Re: Rear discs and Pads
Awrite buddy you should only need a set of sockets and spanners maybe some penetrating fluid to help release the bolt caliper. Not many people seem to reply to you on this website try other forums too. Just being honest. Good luck.

I mate yes this tool is for winding back the piston. Without it you won't be able to complete the job. Can be bought from Halfords or local motor factors. A little tip don't wind the piston in completely as even with new pads this isn't required. Hope that helps.
Re: Rear discs and Pads
Haha ok, cheers for that, I'm an Ag mechanic so spanners and sockets for the job really aren't an issue, although the 3/4" sockets might be a wee bit too big . I'm used to working on Land Rovers too, normally just push the pistons back in with a pry-bar. Although I remember doing the discs and pads on my sisters C1 and had to wind the pistons back in on them, after much head scratching and pry bar pushing, I noticed the wee notch in the piston, thats when the penny dropped! Just wound them back in with a screw driver.
I was thinking maybe VW had some magincal mystery tool especially for the Polo GTI, coolio, thanks for the input, much appreciated,
I'd rather ask a silly question than make a silly mistake!
cheers,
Jim

Re: Rear discs and Pads
No problem glad I could help. I remember the first time i did the rear pads on a mk1 golf i had that had a disc conversion. Let's just say a hammer was used to get the piston back in and then had to bin the calliper. All part of learning. But now we have forums nd other members to help lolkeeperjim wrote:Haha ok, cheers for that, I'm an Ag mechanic so spanners and sockets for the job really aren't an issue, although the 3/4" sockets might be a wee bit too big . Re: Rear discs and Pads
Yeah I've had some good advice from folks on here, been a great help! It's the wee hints and tips that are the best.
Re: Rear discs and Pads
Discs and pads arrived yesterday, so seeing as it's dry and not too cold, got them fitted this morning, quite pleased with how the look, certainly better than the one's that came off I think you'll agree! Although the next job will be to refurb tha calipers, knocked quite a lot of red paint off whilst doing the discs, so kinda spoils the look a bit. Also got some other goodies this week, Wolfsburg valve caps, Wolfsburg door lock pins, number plate surrounds, yes they're Wolfsburg too can you see a pattern emerging!? All I need now are my metal plates to arrive from dubmiester
Re: Rear discs and Pads
There is a specialist tool to wind the callipers back but if you are careful and don't nip the dust covers then a pair of adjustable pliers will do the job just as well.
