Possible clutch on its way out.......

Post by lolhoward »

I've been having problems engaging most gears. Goes in but have to be quite firm and its clucky (no noise) but reverse only goes in if you pull it fast. If you go slow it grinds. Also when stationary I checked bite of clutch. Put it in gear (handbrake on) and lifted clutch and it stalls at almost the highest point. Am I correct in thinking its the clutch?

If so what do I look for in a garage (oem/reconditioned parts ect) and roughly what do garages charge or what have ppl been charged in the past?

Cheers

Check the clutch cable - it may be loose. Pull it forward when its at rest position in the engine bay...if its loose, tighten it up as itll make a big difference

If thats not the case, trying pulling off in 1st then 2nd then 3rd. If 2nd and or 3rd is a struggle its generally a sign of a badly worn clutch

Turns out it was the pedal box. Took it to a bloke to check the clutch and the pedal box has caved in. So i'm not getting full use of the clutch. Getting it done at VW tomorrow for.......wait for it..........£460. :(

can you not do it yourself and save a fortune on the labour costs they have probably charged 3 hours at least.

IIRC, the pedal box was a recall item on 6n2s. I'd try and get the dealer to do it for free tbh. If not, have a word with training standards...

Nah I wont be able to do it myself. Would have done if it was a smaller job.

I thought the recall was just on GTi's ?

The recall was officially on GTIs, but some dealers, if asked nicely, will do it 100% goodwill or at least 50% - might be worth asking the question...but it depends on how old the car is and the mileage covered.

Had pedal box done & brake pedal? Drives like a dream now. Must have been on its way out for ages. Cost £450 and the women couldn't give discount/good will gesture as the last 3 services wasn't done at main dealerships! Gave me a number to call to try my luck there.
