VW Polo 1.4 Gearbox/Cluth Problem..

Post by danny2oo5 »

Hi guys am new to this forum and in hope of some very much needed infomation/help.

Ill start off with what i have the the problem and whats happend.

Ok i have a VW Polo 1.4 2000 reg 3 door in silver

I have just had a new clutch fitted, However a week later its been really hard to get into gear and take out of gear and i mean you have to really pull it out ,and also pops out of reverse. Now when you come to slow down in gear it makes a really bad "whining noise" and can be hear outside the car and bad inside and has a slight wobble in the gear stick when its doing this ( Only happens when your slowing down not when your driving upto speed )

My question to you guys are what can this problem be.?

Gearbox/Gearbox oil?
Clutch & Clutch bearing?

Really would appreshate the help here as i need to get this fixed soon as possible.!

Thanks Dan :!:

hi danny, sounds like you have a similar problem as myself and my 1.4
i possed more or less the same question a couple of threads ago with little success
i believe some or one of the bearings in your box are in the proccess of failing,
at the moment its saveable by replacing said bearings
however no-one seems to be able to tell me wether this is a straight forward diy job or
wether it needs a pro.

by doing a search on here i found out you can-get uprated rally items
again no one wants to share were these are available from

anyway good luck danny

as you can see ime new here too! so my info may not be 100%

hey,
yeah i had the same problem :)
my gears would not go in either. I had my clutch replaced which helped alot but then it still had a problem with going in gear.
The bearing which has been mentioned had worn down so i had to get that replaced, i got it done a garage as it seemed awkward :P
Its sounds identical to my problem so i would recomend looking at the bearing :D

hello mate my car is in the garage as i type lol :( anyway i had movement in 4th when you slow down in that gear like kicking mtion the bloke called it he said that was the bottom bearing in the gearbox, VW boxes are harder to repair in the 6N2 anyway, i also had a problem with engaging 1st and 2nd sometimes and the same whining but if i put the clutch down it would stop it :) basically my gearbox is now undergoing a full restoration at gearlink in salisbury who have been recommended to me by a fair few people i know.

Sorry about the essay must be the longest thing i written since i left school lol :P Anyway i suggest going to a good garage preferably a gearbox specialist and get them to have a quick drive :) Hope this helps

These post are wrong!
I posted this some time ago:
Hi,
Not sure y u have started a new thread when there are plenty of others posting on this .... but my daughters 2001 1.4 Match 77k miles clutch felt funny; going to the floor. we had a new clutch fitted (£225). After a month it was the same, gouing to the floor and not dis engaging; she took the car back and they said the clutch pedal ws broken! I checked it out by removing the kick panel (little torx headed screws) and could find nothing wrong with the pedal. I looked further and lying on my back in the foot well worked the pedal with my hand. Using a bright torch I could just see the bracket supporting the cable moving slightly it was very hard to see. Posts on here said that it had been done on other oeners cars under goodwill but it might take several different dealers before finding one that was prepared to do it.
I contacted Leicester VW they were not interested unless the car had a full service history with them; I tried arthur Prince at Loughborough where I had several pieces of work carried out in the past but not on this car - they took details contacted VW UK and did the work FOC. There is a recall on the GTI but not the ordinary ones. I understand the criteria is the car has to be less than 8yrs. old and less than 999999 miles. An independent may do it for £150 to 200.
Good luck. It's a hell of a job but a mechanic who has done several will not take more than 2-3 hours.
