Trouble smoothing the badge hole off on my Mk4 tailgate

Post by low-and-slow-polo »

Hi people Im having trouble soothing off my badge hole in my tale gate, the first time I tried I just used filler and filled it in , but as the weather got colder the filler started to pop out of the hole , the second time I tried I used fibreglass first then a skim of filler over the top and now that has popped out again.
does any one else have any other suggestions on what I can do.

Thanks Gareth.

Have you gone back to bare metal on the area your applying the filler and cleaning before applying the filler??

Also the area has to be really roughed up no shinny paint at all showing.

Also don't fill the hole in one hit, to much filler will not cure and adere to the hole...

Na no welding required but you could weld it up but you would distress the whole boot with heat and cause alot of shaping so filler is the way....

say if you wanted to remove all the trim around the car, which would be the best technique?

and any ideas about how much it would cost to have it done?

For bumpers it's plastic welding and ranges from about £100-150 a bumper

id tack weld a thin palte of metal to the back of the boot from the inside. warping can be avoided by only doing a little bit at a time so as not to let the metal get too hot, this should then make the filler work better as its got something to stick to at the back of the whole
