1984 MKII Polo Breadvan cutting out, refusing to start.

Post by AidanC98 »

Hi,

My car started playing up a couple of weeks ago, stalling constantly. We traced the problem to, what seems to be a fairly notorious issue, the rubber carburetor gasket which seemed to have cracked and was taking in too much air, causing the engine to stall. We resealed that, and for a day or two, it ran perfectly. On the way to work the other morning, the engine cut out and refused to start again. I had a look under the bonnet and noticed one of the HT ignition leads had broken. Still, however, the car will cut out while idling and often won't start again.

It also smells incredibly gassy, and upon inspection of the spark plugs, the engine appears to be running rich. I've adjusted the mix screw, idle speed to what should be about right, but to no avail.

I've replaced HT leads, new air filter, fuel filter, rotor arm, new points and tried a new fuel pump but ended up getting a faulty one that ended up with the car breaking down in rush hour traffic!

Hopefully you'll know something that I don't, cheers!
