Changed the fuel filter, air filter and MAF sensor today. Should be breathing easier now.

New MAF has solved my MPG issues. Now reaching 50MPG now sweat. and 62MPGs on long journeys.

Fuel filter was smaller than the previous one with drain, so I cut a tin can in half to act as a spacer so it sits nice.

I think I'm going to look into an oil catch can and EGR disable also. The amount of sticky filth in the air intake was horrible. Has to be OEM looking and keep the anti-shudder though.

Things have been very slow on the car front. Wedding season is now over though, so I get a bit of a life back meaning I may have time to spend on the car! ( new camera and new flat says otherwise though :think: )

I'm now sporting a nice new arm rest. My non genuine Golf 4 one was creaky, so I was looking for a replacement genuine one. But I never quite liked the process of self tapping the arm rest into the existing plastic of the centre console. So I looked elsewhere

The fabia mark ii ones are similiar, and with a bit of modding you can bolt them onto the car.

First I have to attach my golf 4 top. The golf and fabia ones are different enough that they dont clip right in, I had to shave the golf 4 lugs off and get some heavy duty adhesive to attach it.

Next was fitting it to the car. It's not easy but does work. In order to bolt it to the car, get a snug fit in existing centre console, and keeping the plastic trims looking clean cut and OEM, you have to elevate the armrest. If you dont do this, you can't get access to the bolt to attach the rest without compromising the look of the plastic trim and/or centre console.

I used two pre-drilled wooden blocks to do this. I chose these over metal as it gave me margin for error with the location of the pilot holes in the car in respect to the mouting holes on the arm rest mount.

I used M8 coach screws to attach it. It's now solid as a brick, I now reckon I could drop kick my arm rest and it wouldn't budge. The golf 4 one never felt as solid.

Took ages to get my head around, and looks pretty much exactly the same as my Golf 4 one, but so much better. the higher position improves driving stance now also. I can set the arm rest pointing down and it offers a nice resting place for my are whilst retaining the ability to change gears.

This is what all the fuss was about, I now have finger tip access to my iPod, rather than it being half a foot away in the glovebox; god I'm lazy.

I also (thought I) finished my sub box. I'm fairly sure I started this back in January? :wonder:
I had a moment of triumph as I put the last layer of carpet on, like a huge weight had lifted from my head.... it was finished.
Went to fit the next day and tweak audio levels, and it now doesnt fit... Great. Seems with the added thickness of the carpet it's too much of a snug fit and the rear seat wont close. Looks like I'm going to have to rip all the carpet off, cut 5mm off the size, and re-fibreglass the end on. PITA!

Also just picked up an OEM SACHs clutch kit, mine has been slipping since the remap and gradually getting worse. Will keep an eye on the DMF also..

Nice work Tim. Great effort with the arm rest. Such a shame the carpet makes that much difference though. I am sure you will sort it though 8)

Few updates from the last month.

My car took a heavy beating from the torrential down pours a few weeks back, and I was left with a 4 inch deep puddle in my footwell! Luckily the rear offside didn't leak, otherwise it would've been goodbye amp.

The car was stripped bare (that white powder is absorbant crystals)

And I rocked around like this for a few days. The car sounded awesome!

3 days off drying out the underlay. When I bought the car, there was a 50p sized hole in the carpet where it meets the rest plate. So I thought whilst out I'd sort that out. I bought a new carpet, which literally could've been new, amazing condition

After a few recommendations on here I bought plumbers gold and sealed the **** out of the two remaining leaky doors.

We've since had some horrendous down pours and all doors have held up great. So I'm hoping that's job done!

I used Poorboys Black Hole Glaze, and Megs stage 3 (just run out of collinite 476s)

Looking good as always tim! Some good progress there.

Ill have to see the car in the flesh (or should i say metal!) at some point. Looks a treat.

Finally got some updates for this!

The niggly bits are starting to pile up on the car, so have decided to sort a few of them out.

Firstly, the car was in need of a service. All the filters were changed end of last year, so it was just the oil/oil filter, top up all fluids and have a nose. I used Quantum long life oil.

I bought a load of new bits from Skoda. New front mats, arm rest trim, passenger door trim, bumper clips, under tray clips (mines been off for months!),

I dunno about anyone else, but I had no idea what I was purchasing when I bought the 'bumper clips'. I've never seen a picture of how they work, here's for anyone else who's curious:

I'm still not happy with how the bumpers sit, they've sorted it out for the most part, but still not 100% flush, anyone else get the same problem?

I was in a bit of a rush as it was pretty much pouring with rain, so may give it another go. Not really sure how much life these clips have in them though, may have to buy another set to get it right. From removing the bumper i noticed the IC is a bit of a state, so will take it apart again to give this a good clean anyhow.

Mine had some slight play from removing the doorcards several times to fit the audio.

I also bought a catch can, along with some kind donations from a few Brisky members.

Still waiting on my breather, just need another 90 degree bend and the have the right colour breather sent out. I wanted everything all black and subtle so it looks OEM, and mounted it low so that you can't see when the engine cover is on.
I was therefore pretty miffed when the catch can (which was advertised as all plain black) arrived with a massive Toyosport logo on it. So I got some black vinyl to cover that up, and with the remainder of the vinyl, made up a nice finish for the engine cover (the OEM plastic scratches wayyy to easily). I've had a vRS badge waiting to go on it for months.

Here's what I have so far with regards to the catch can.

I had plans to blank off the EGR same day also, but ran out of time. I'll do this within the next couple of weeks when I get a chance.

Also, I bought some new wheels. I had plans for some 17" Audi TDi sport wheels, which I think would've looked really good. But after pricing everything up to around £750 (wheels, refurb, tyres, adaptors, fitting) I couldn't justify it. Also, I love how the car handles on 16's. Some freshly refurbed gunmetal OEM wheels came up on here for a good price, so I couldn't resist.

3 coats of sealant, 2 coats of wax per wheel.

Went to have the tyres changed over, and the front inners are knackered. So new rubber on the front also (86916k for my own reference).

I'll have pics of the wheels on the car when I've received my new centre caps.

Car's booked into to have the tracking done on Tuesday also. It's never been right and has always pulled to the left since the last set of tyres. I've explained how much grief I've had with previous alignment, and that many other suffer from the same problems, but he seems to know what he's talking about and has warmly accepted the challenge. So fingers crossed I'll have a straight running car!

So list of jobs to-do is now looking like this

EGR blank
IC clean and have another crack at the bumpers.
Book in with electric specialist to sort out the phantom self locking issue I have
Fix the sticky boot mechanism
Remove backbox (gain back some weight-loss from the sound proofing)
Few bits and bobs at the sprayers
Keep an eye out for a good deal on 312mms.
Then a full correction detail in the spring.

Time will tell what I think of them, initial impressions are that I should've perhaps gone with OEM design...


Also fitted my breather finally, which completes the catch can setup, Have waited a while for this to be delivered. Keen to give the engine bay a clean now!

Nice to see some updates Tim- looking very nice indeed. What size are the VRS front brakes?

Brakes are standard 288mm mate.
