Someone's hit my car

Post by skymera »

I have just noticed this damage on my car.
The wing has been folded in, some paint has been taken off the door and the wheel has been scuffed .

Apologies for the picture size. I'm so mad I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

How best to fix this ? What's the cost for a wheel refurb ?

I have had TheDentMan out to check out the wing and he says he can only get "70-75%" of the dent out as it's quite severe and the location of it. That is also £85 +VAT per panel.

This Saturday I am off to a VW approved body specialist to get an estimate on the damage

- Wheel refurb
- Wing repair (dent and paint)
- Door repair (paint)

I also noticed the door has been bent slightly too, where the other car has hit the edge, it's stoved the side in. Luckily, it hasn't rippled and it's very minor so I can let that one go.

If the dent on the wing can't be repaired , what am I looking at for a new wing plus paint and fitting?

Comments welcome :)

Repair estimate back, £1,216

About £250 in bodywork
About £250 in paint
And about £500 in labour

Oh, plus VAT.

I'm now waiting for Martin's VW to come back with an estimate, but this will most likely be a claim on my insurance.

I still can't believe someone can do this damage to a car and think it's perfectly acceptable to drive off.

New panel + paintjob and a new rim are probably almost cheaper.
panel 6R0821105H = 160 euro + tax
rim not sure, paid CHF240 for a 17" mallory, i can imagine a 16" around the same price.

the door chip can probably be done with a spot repair...

VW bodyshop provided a quote of £1,083 which included a brand new wing, rust protection, headlight adjust and some other bits the first place didn't offer. So I'll go with them

But this will now be a claim on my insurance. Sigh

The car is now being repaired by VW. And I have a 1.4 Vauxhall Corsa E as a courtesy car.

The Polo will feel like a Bentley when I finally get it back! This Corsa is CRAP.

For anyone interested, I have the car back from VW.

The repair took 6 days and they even delivered it about 50 miles for me!

Wheel paint is pretty much spot on. I haven't noticed anything but the car was and is still filthy dirty.

The paint on the wing is sub par in my opinion. The top of the wing and the door blend is very "orange peel" like and the shine is pretty poor. It shines in a way you'd expect a freshly varnished wooden table, not a freshly painted panel!

After spending 2 hrs cleaning the car yesterday it was clear just how crap the work done by VW was.
The difference in paint quality and shine from the rear quarter forward was shocking.

- Quite severe orange peel in certain areas
- They didn't fix the paint chip in the door
- Lacquer has cracked on the alloy
- Possible paint run on the alloy (I'll double check)
- Very dull / hazy shine
- Several imperfections in the paint. Dust or grit underneath.

They're collecting it tomorrow and providing another Polo as a courtesy car.
I'll provide pics tomorrow.

That's disappointing and quite poor skymera. It shouldn't have left the body shop like that. Makes you wonder what the VW post-repair quality control inspection process is (if indeed there is one!), to ensure the repair is up to factory standard.

Hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction soon.

Thanks for the reply. They're collecting at around 10.30.

Sadly, the pictures don't capture everything the eye does and you don't see the true haziness of the shine.
The final image shows some grit under the paint. By itself, not significant, but these are scattered over the repair work.

Looking at the full resolution pictures, I wouldn't be happy with that.

There's usually a degree of orange peel in the factory paint, but not as excessive as you've got in your repainted areas. Wet sanding the new paint and then machine polishing could improve it but this isn't something I'd want to attempt, in case of sanding through the clear coat. I'd be interested to know why they didn't repair the paint chip on the leading edge of the door, which is pretty visible in the photo.

What ever means VW use to rectify it, I'd want it back to factory standard and I'd not be happy with it until it was.

My daughter had to have a re-spray on one wing after some clown hit it when it was parked so feel for you and the quality of the repair. I went to collect it with her and rejected it on the spot for a similar problem. The repair shop manager was summoned and agreed with me. Redone to my satisfaction :) . No car should have any orange peel effect if the sprayer is competent. It is sometimes down to poor preparation prior to the application of the final coat, paint consistency or paint shop too cold. I have re-sprayed a panel on an old banger for a friend with spray cans and got a better finish!!

Thanks for the replies.
Martins VW have phoned me and the car is ready to be delivered.

The work done
- Door removed and repainted
- Wheel repainted
- Door and wing machine polished

They never mentioned about repainting the wing so the small imperfections underneath might still be there!
And annoyingly I chucked £30 in their 1.2 TSi Polo this morning. Guess I'm gonna lose out there.

More pics to come of the new work!
