1.2TDI, odd engine noise

Post by matt-t »

Having purchased a 1.2 TDI i have noticed an abnormal engine noise.

This noise happens when changing gear at low RPM (sub 2500), the noise is hard to describe but it is a grumbling/vibration sound.

I doubt this is a natural feature of the engine and is a bit of a worry

It is only apparent when going up the gears, not down.
The noise doesn't seem to happen if i accelerate hard and change around 3000, but i don't tend to drive it this hard generally.

Anyone got any opinions or experience with these engines that can help?

Thanks in advance!

it could be your fuel lines.

if you open up your bonnet, and stand in front of the car, facing the winshield, you'll see this:

The fuel lines sometimes may rattle a bit. you can move the most forward one to the middle clamp. They are located here:

The gear shift cables can also chafe on the exhaust heat shield where they come out of the tunnel towards the gearbox
