Switching fog lights for DRLs

Post by EdwardBall »

Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the T17 headlight switch? Trying to figure out which wires are fogs, and which are DRLs.

There are several possible diagrams, depending on your 6R. Model Year, Bluemotion, Bixenon, etc ...

Cheers Ciclo, managed to get it figured out in the end. I replaced my fog lights with DRLs, and moved the fog pin in the connector to the DRL pin, changing my DRLs from 1/2 power low beam to the new Drls. My only problem now is that even at the '0' position, my side lights are always on. I went into VCDS and turned off 'sidelights on with terminal 53' or whatever it was, but it made no difference. I appreciate I've deviated from the factory wiring in spoofing Drls as fog lights, so there might be no workaround?

edit: this topic is related with this one.

----

This is absolutely interesting ... :o

I think your BCM is going to end up in a psychiatrist (in the best case), it seems to know that the side lights must be turned on if the fog lights are ON.
Due to your pin exchange on the light switch connector :) .. .. I think that (in your case) your BCM (non Max) permanently is receiving the signal of fog lights ON (spoofing Drls).

(in your case) explanation: because in 6R Europe there are three ways in which the fog lights can be wired from factory, also because there are five ways in which the DRLs can be wired from factory. (... and it is not black magic , it is absolutely true)

Now we have to find out what your original combination is for both lights, DRL's and fogs.

As for your original DRL's is clear to me (they are basic DRL's, through light switch --> Low Beam), we now need to confirm your original fog lights.

Take three pictures, two from the light switch connector in which the color of the wires are perfectly visible (both sides), and one from the fuse box (under the steering wheel)
Does your 6R have the static cornering lights from factory?

This is one (among others) of the light switch diagrams for Polo 6R Europe...
Image
...as you can see, the asterisks indicate that there are possible variants and other indications, in addition there are several models of light switches for Polo 6R that work differently, and many other things... bla,bla,bla...

With luck, there can be an easy solution to solve the installation of this non-original equipment for your 6R with BCM non Max. In any case it has solution.

I think you might be right :D Let's just say the electronics in my car are not all completely OEM 8)

tbh I'm no entirely sure that when in the '0' position before I changed things around, the side lights weren't on anyway. I was planning on getting a new light switch with just the rear fog light option as I no longer have front fogs, maybe this would help? And I'm interested in setting ALL lights to be off when in the '0' position apart from DRLs, (numberplate, rear tails) but have thus far failed. Here are the photos, please don't kill me for what I've done to the light switch, my car is all about functionality  Image Image Image I had cornering lights by using the fog light in the direction I was turning before, I have since turned this off in VCDS

Going to install my voltmeter today and stick strictly to your instructions this time :D

Thank you very much for sharing the pictures. 8)

Once confirmed that your original front fog lamps work through the BCM do the following.

First test:

- Remove and isolate with cloth tape (very important) the T17/6 original grey/blue wire from the light switch connector. (try not to damage its locking mechanism in the connector  ). Same with the T17/3 original grey/violet wire - on the picture it looks like it is already made, but not correct way, you must use cloth tape -
These two wires must be isolated separately.

- Check all lights one by one, all light switch positions (including side lights, parking lights and license plate lights), and also the new Drl's powered by the fog light wiring through the T17/3 slot - same like picture -.

Tell us the results.

Alas, I fear this may be the solution. With pin 6 removed, all my lights work as I want them, apart from in the '0' position, I now longer have fake-fog-drls :( That is, in the '0' position, there are no lights, in side light position, front side lights, rear tails and numberplate are on, and in low beam position, all lights are on. There is no way to activate the fake-fog-drls with pin 6 removed. The reason I did not wire everything properly is because I have previously wired things throught the firewall, and swore never again, plus all the wiring is in position to use, plus the fog wiring is impossible to locate as it exits the fogs, it goes into a massive loom cloth taped and disappears. I could buy all new connectors and wiring and wire it properly, but at this point I don't see the benefit being worth my time. For now I will try and see how else to get the DRLs on in the '0' position with my existing wiring in place, unless you have any suggestions

Tell me the reference number of your light switch. It's on the white label.

Oh dear...I'm afraid long ago I broke the original light switch and ordered a (most like non-oem) replacement, which has no serial or part number

Okay, do not worry, as I said earlier we just needed to have a bit of luck... well, as the predictions have been fulfilled, we're going to try to get your fake Drl's to work as they should (like Drl's), by using the magic of VCDS. (without new wires and without a new oath )
Image...

Second test:

- Insert the yellow wire into its original slot in the light switch connector, T17/8. ... and please do not ever do a pin exchange again on the light switch connector.

- The following Bytes Bits must be enabled in your BCM:

Byte12 Bit6
Byte21 Bit7
Byte23 Bit2
Byte23 Bit6

Notes:
1-In case of fault in the diagnostic systems of your 6R or also VCDS autoscan (due to the type of fake/non-oem LED lamp that is used), it will be necessary to find the correct combination between Bit0 and Bit5 of Byte19. I explain it: One enabled and the other disable, or vice versa.
2-Post an autoscan here if you have problems with coding. I'll tell you what you have to do.

Good luck!

Check all lights again.
Tell us the results, and take some picture to show us your 6R with the new front bumper, etc ...

--------------
To the rest:
All of this previously written is for this 6R only.
If you have a 6R in similar conditions, please provide the same information and maybe you have the same fate/luck.

Unfortunately none of those changes / combinations made any impact. As a side note I now notice that my dash panel lights are on all the time irrespective of what position the light switch is in, but maybe it was always like that, I can't remember. For now I think I shall leave it how I set it up initially which unfortunately means my tails / number-plate lights and sidelights will always be on. Maybe one day I will be brave enough to wire it properly, who knows. RE photos, i plan to make a thread on my build when it's in slightly better condition, after it's been washed and I've cleaned up the mess inside 8)

Here's my autoscan, although I don't think it tells me anything I didn't already know (left heated mirror broken, mirror switch temperamental, airbag faulty, amplifier installed etc). I marvel at people who have fully clean autoscans

There was no luck. :x
To be able to operate those lights you will have to make a new electrical installation from the light switch (T17/3) - fuse - new lights like DRL's. (without BCM control)
At least we have tried. :|

I'm absolutely sure you can do things properly, you do not need to prove anything.

Info

Your BCM
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2nv91 ... sp=sharing

Your original front Fog lights
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2nv91 ... sp=sharing

Your original Drl's
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2nv91 ... sp=sharing

What you should do for the new DRL's
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2nv91 ... sp=sharing

The folder with more information so you can compare (download it, I need space and I have to delete it)
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing
There are other possible variants but they are not necessary.

As for coding:

Byte12 Bit6 Turn/cornering lights installed active
Byte21 Bit7 Front fog lights with turn/cornering lights installed
Byte23 Bit2 Cornering lights as DRL's
Byte23 Bit6 DRL's function active

The software of your BCM manages your fog lights/cornering lights, but it seems that it needs the signal from T17/3 to T73b/29 to be able to manage the cornering lights as DRL's. The problem is that the 6R0 BCM High hardware does not have the T73b/29 pin. (T17/3 = '0' position of light switch)

All BCMs have this signal from other sources (eg ignition switch). I do not know why your BCM software does not manage it. (that's why we try)
There is a great variety of software/hardware for 6R0 BCM High and yours is quite old (2010).

We do not need the BCM having a pair of wires and a fuse ...
