110 TSI R Line potential purchase

Looking at a new Polo R Line 110PS TSI, as it is a 3 cylinder are there any issues with this as I test drove a Clio two years ago and the salesman apologised in advance that it would be a bit rough the Clio that is (Or would I be better off with a 6 month old Blue GT with 4 cylinders ?)

Well, the 1.4 ACT is a cracking engine so I would seriously consider getting the BlueGT, although you lose out on some things like the LED headlights. It is both more powerful and more fuel efficient...

The 1.0tsi however is also a great little engine. It is very well engineered so that it does not require a balancing rod, yet still remains completely imperceptible as being 3 cyclinder at tickover. My Mum owns a 60hp 1.0 and that feels rough as nails and noisy by comparison. I'm very pleased with my 1.0tsi.

Another option is the 4 cyl 1.2 TSi R-Line. OK, its 'only' 90ps, but it pulls nicely at low revs and is extremely smooth and quiet.

I agree with d-ash, as an owner of the new 4 cylinder 1.2 TSI i can say out of the bunch its my favourite. Might only be 90PS but with the turbo certainly doesnt feel it, I used to have a 1.6 naturally aspirated in another make of vehicle and it would blow it out of the water.. The lowdown torque makes a huge difference and as he also pointed out is extremely quiet and linear. Doesn't need to be revved out to make it go.

Also worth noting it's not just about what hp the engine delivers its across what rpm range and what torque curve.

Just an FYI the comparable torque is:

1.0tsi rpm 2000-3500 148nm
1.2tsi rpm 1500-3000 118nm

It's quite a noticeable difference! I've driven both and the 1.0 is a very pleasant surprise!

I agree with eelis.........the 3 cylinder 110ps engine in my SEL is very smooth and pulls really well, I would not hesitate to buy another one.
The 4 cylinder 1.2 TSI does not have as much torque as the 3 cylinder (see article below.... different car but same engine )

I bought an SEL about a year ago when they were selling off the line of 1.2Tsi 4-cylinder 110hps to be replaced by the 1.0 3 cylinders which were more economical so i purchased one of the 1.2s. Never driven a 1.0 although the tech specs for both cars are very similar apart from i pay £20 tax over the £0 for the new engine. MPG is very similar too. I have to say on the motorway the turbo is great for getting up to speed. I can't comment for the 1.0 although other comments suggest its still a really good engine! But if you are concerned - they stopped making the 1.2 in 65/16plates so that could be an option?...

I bought/ordered my wife a new Polo 1.2TSI 110PS SEL back in April 2015 with a projected build date of end of July 2015, I was advised that while I had ordered a 1.2, it could be that the order, if it gets held up, will only get accepted at the factory after the change to 1.0 engine, so had had some worrying weeks before VW did confirm that the order had been accepted at the factory for a 1.2.

So I wonder what held up the introduction of the 1.0 engine for so long, maybe 18 months later than originally due in the showrooms?

Being realistic, fashion/economy/emissions has forced VW group to join the herd with an offering of 3 cylinder 1.0litre engines, but I'll avoid them for a bit longer, as the current 1.2TSI can, in my eyes feel a bit like a TDI in its delivery of torque, I would worry that the higher earlier torque peak of the 1.0TSI is more like the PDI engines torque delivery, ie a bit like an Off/On/Off switch that could detract from the driving experience.

Obviously anyone with a latest 1.2TSI 110 will hold onto their concerns for moving on to a 1.0TSI 110, life is just like that!

1.2 TSi 4 cyl currently available with 90ps output

Well I have taken the plunge and ordered a white R line 5 door 110PS engine with climate and convenience pack so should be picking it up next week. Got a decent trade in and money off the Polo so not much too much money to change. I would have changed last month when road tax was cheaper or even zero but the time wasn't in my favour but never mind.

So is it 1.0 or 1.2, both are 110PS I guess?

No. Only the 1.0 is currently provided with 110PS
