Well... What is it?

I used regular wax on a set of wheels a while back, worked fine. It's all painted metal in the end, so I thought I would be fine anyhow. What's the difference?

Wheel wax is a lot more durable than "normal" wax... I suppose it needs to be to stop the baking hot brake dust from burning into it.

If it's as good as its claimed, it might be worth a try.
