Polo 9n3 1.4 TDI 2008 - sounds like a dog

Post by saj121 »

Hi all,

New to the forum and thank you for the help you have provided me.

Bought this car from a salvage - engine was ticking over but mis-firing, did a VCDS scan and found that the injector wiring loom was faulty and had this replaced.

There are no fault codes but it's not cranking over - sounds like a dogs stuck in there somewhere

I've pasted the video of what it sounds like. Can someone help in getting this back on the road??

Advise/support would be appreciated!

Thanks!!

That sounds horrendous

When was the diesel filter last changed?

Is the oil level correct?

Recently done, fuel filter and oil filter changed. engine oil is fine too.

Any ideas what I should check?

When was the Cambelt last done? If not recent, check its condition

Cambelt looked fine, could it be the starter motor or battery?

It could be the battery. are you able to pin point the noise it's making?

What are the dash lights doing when you try start the car

It all lights up as i'm turning on so starting to think it might be the battery too..

I charged it up last night but I'll jump it and see what happens - will keep you posted!

That sounds a bit like the timing is out, if I were you, if it is not already too late, I would not attempt to start that engine before checking the timing. You could have some bits hitting other bits inside the engine.

Timing belt seems ok, it almost fires up.

The squeal sounds like it's coming from the alternator.

Battery levels were fine by the way, I'm going to have someone look at it tomorrow

Good luck, what I was trying to get you to check was the actual engine crank to cam relative timing.

Right so update on this - incase someone else does have a similar issue

The noise actually stopped when I tried to show one of my mechanic friends!

Just sounded like a normal engine trying to crank but failing - belts turning, cambelt quality was good (looked recently changed by the date)

The negative cable was corroded so we earthed it a little better to which we noticed some heat smoke from the starter motor (as it was quite cold today!)

No fault codes on VCDS still but our assumption is now that the starter motor was the culprit and will look to get this changed this week!

Will update on progress!!

I confess to knowing nothing about that specific engine, but my concern would be that the DMF could have caused this problem with the starter motor, so maybe prepare for that extra potential spend.

That 1.4 TDI will have a SMF, the exception being the 90PS version found in the Audi A2.

That should be good news. I'm surprised that VAG has left some engines with a SMF - I thought this was yet another improvement that we all were getting like it or not.

The 1.4 TDI AMF block was used since the 6N2 in 2000 right up until the final 9N3 in 2009. VW weren't investing in DMF so heavily at that point
