Wishbone bushes

Post by DC_BS »

Car's MOT is due next month, when I had it serviced last year the garage mentioned both front wishbone rear bushes have worn, which was a few weeks after the MOT. Is this tested as part of it? And can it count as a fail?

When I turn full lock to the left there's a small grinding noise so I think its down to that cos its on that side.

The garage quoted £328 to replace it, which is a bit extortionate, the part doesn't cost that much does it? What's a fair price and should I look at fixing it before the MOT? Cos I don't really want to wait for the test to show what needs fixing.

Yes it's a failure point

Entire wishbones are 50 a side. The bushes are around 13 quid a side. They have to be pressed out

£328 is very steep

It's around an hours work or so per side plus around twenty minutes extra if just replacing the bushes

Ah, well tomorrow I'm having it looked at by ATS, they're doing a free check so I wanna know for sure before I put any money in it.

It just said on the invoice sheet both front wishbone rear bushes are worn, which might be why it makes a grinding sound when I turn full lock to the left (doesn't happen when turning right)

Right, back from ATS (was sceptical about using them cos read alot of bad reviews). Anyways they said they can't hear and sounds when turning full lock to the left, so its not related to the wishbone bushes. Suspension is a bit weak so 50/50 whether it'll pass the MOT, if it doesn't I hope I just need two front shocks.

They did however notice the clutch cable wasn't installed properly, it shouldn't look like this should it? The guy initially tried telling me my clutch was on its way out, but I told him I only had it changed 6 months ago. Only then after we lifted the bonnet and saw when you press the pedal half-way down it doesn't engage at all.

This is a diagram shown of a clutch cable on a Polo and it doesn't look the same

Think Halfords are going to get another bollocking soon but I can't be arsed with them at the moment!

Looks like it's been a over tightened. It's a cheap clutch cable too by the looks of it

They said the wrong screw has been used on the end as well. I remember they had an issue getting hold of the clutch cable back in August. Hard to know who to believe these days cos I've read bad reviews on chain places who only want to make money so sometimes they'll make work up. Surprised the guys didn't try to say £400 worth of suspension work needed doing. Guess I'll have to wait and see what the MOT says.

I know this was like 5 months ago but just to notify everyone the motor passed the MOT with no advisories! And I still have the motor now! Driving very well as always, esp on motorways!

I even had the mechanic check the vehicle before the MOT and he said its fine, both wishbone's solid so he doesn't know what the Bosch garage was on about them being worn. Probably trying to fleece me for a few hundred!
