Last night I noticed that my breather hose is torn. I was smelling strange fumes for the last couple of days. Is it an easy job to replace? Seems hard to reach at the bottom.
I guess it's a different job for a RHD GTI compared to a LHD, since you have the main brake caliper and ABS pump somewhere in that region. As for my LHD car I have some air-conditioning tubes and filler box sitting in the way. I guess for small hands it's doable, but I'm not sure how much force is needed to put it back on.

Which part is torn. Block to breather or breather to airboz?

Breather to airbox in the curve.

That's quite easily replaced. Doesn't need much pressure at all

Great, but the part ordered contains the lower part and heater element as well. I'll try to at least replace the heater element also which is still in reach for my hands I think.
BTW - I ordered the electrical connector for the oxygen sensor also.

Replacement of the entire breather hose was easy. After removing the air filter it was easy to reach. There was a lot of dirt and sludge inside.

I have the electrical connector for the oxygen sensor but there are no pins to crimp onto the wires if you know what I mean.

You'll need to order vw repair wires in the appropriate wire sizes for that connector and cut/heat shrink crimp the wires onto the existing ones

No problem, I found a place where I can order the connectors to crimp directly onto the wires.

I received my Bosch oxygen sensor today, I also have all parts to restore the connector on the wiring
Now if I only had the schematics

My GTi has the ARC engine so pins are as follows:

Is this of any help - it's what I used on my ARC engine and having checked the AVY is the same

1 - Brown / Red, lambda sensor

2 - White / Red, lambda

3 - Green, Feed to heater circuit from fuel pump relay, should be 12v

4 - Green / Brown, "earth" side of heater circuit, connects to ECU

5 - Green / Grey, lambda

6 - Blue / Green, lambda

According to the wiring diagram pins 2 and 6 are joined within the connector, but I didn't see that in the real world.

Don't get the numbering for the two banks of pins mixed up like I did

Tomorrow I'll have a day off to replace the sensor. Thanks 937carrera, I can't verify your wiring scheme, but it will have to do and we'll see if it works.
Does anyone know where to put the jack stands under the front of the car?

Rear of the front wishbones where the bolts go through is a good place to put jack stands.

Problem SOLVED!!

Finally after driving like this for over a year. The sensor that came of was exactly the same. Looked like new. But wheter the sensor was defect or that not connected 6th wire caused it, we'll never know. And I don't care.
