I`m guessing its polished metal and not painted?
If it has`nt been looked after you may be better off just stripping it down and re-polishing it! You could then re-lacquer it. If the metal has pitted under the lacquer there`s not alot you can do mate. Photos would help

Keep them polished regularly. autosol is a good metal polish.

ive just put my Steffans back on after having them refurbed.

ive had the dish mirror polished [with custom marble and red candy centres] and i havent had them lacquered.

the problem you could have with lacquering them is, if it gets chipped water will get underneath it and cause them to flake.

as for polishing them...in talking to alot of people, it seems most people think Autosol is to course for regular use.

so ive bought Meguairs all metal polish and Poorboys wheel sealant wax to look after mine.

Autosol or Peek is the best metal polish out there IMO.
