Standrd 1.8t suspension question - Advice please!

Post by joules1.8T »

Hello everyone.

Does anyone else find that the standard factory suspension on the 9n3 polo Gti very harsh and skittish?

Ever since owning the car I have found the handling to be terrible. I have had the tracking done, which improved things slightly. But the main issue still remains - the handling is pants and feels unstable..

Will changing the suspension resolve the terrible handling?

Cheers

My only niggle is the girlie soft power steering it takes away the feeling of what the car is doing hence pants stability .. I think the suspension set up is ok just ruined by this..

Thanks for the reply.
You are right. The steering is very light, I notice this now after you pointed it out. I could not put my finger on it before.
This combined with (in my opinion) overly stiff suspension is the source of the bad handling.

Time to ditch the suspension........possibly the motor....

I've found this slightly but mines in coilovers but sometimes it seems to 'tramline' as such and will sometimes pull with slight dips in the road etc does anyone have anything that could solve this? Seems to be better at higher speeds tho or is this just how the polos power steering is set up??

Thanks

The tramline effect is normally down to the size of wheels\tyres used. The bigger the wheel \ thinner tyre wall, the worse it will be in my experience.

Not a great deal you can do in that respect, apart from avoid the lines on the road! :D

Check your tyre pressures are correct and not over inflated \ tracking and maybe softer compound tyre...

Joules, what did you do to sort this out? I also drive a 1.9 TDI which I believe shares the same setup as the GTI and too find the ride to be very harsh and skittish. I can't drive over a speed bump at over 7/8mph :(

Hi Joules,

Yes, please share what you did to improve your suspension or what you opted for if you did fact fit some uprated gear!? I have recently acquired a VW Polo 9n3 GTi, and totally have the same issue with the suspension being crashy and skittish as you guys say, especially across imperfections and gaps in the road.. The suspension does seem to be nice and taut, but the rear can also 'hop' when in a turn and going over roughish roads..

Would like to hear your experience please sir!

Thanks!
