Polo GTI broken timing belt engine trouble

Hi
Trying to recommission my Polo GTI 2001 following the timing belt breaking at 20mph. Got a belt fitted by my local garage and after Valve, head gasket and cylinder head work engine still burning oil and smoking badly. Unfortunately I am not a mechanic and the garage is reluctant to look at piston rings etc or undertake a complete engine rebuild. I have tried contacting a few engine rebuild specialists near my home in Glasgow but the prices quoted are not economic at 2k and a three month wait. I have already spent over £700 but returned the car due to the smoke....
I have had the car since 2003 and would appreciate any suggestions on who could accurately assess / do the job as it would be a shame to sell for parts. I started on the bodywork and should have checked the engine but it has only done around 92 k. Is it worth keeping. Who could help..?
Any help appreciated has been very frustrating calling garages that clearly are not interested in helping.
No rush up to Christmas but would be happy to look at it again in the new year.
