Fuel pump

HELP please, replacing head gasket on a mk 2 polo could someone shed some light on where I'm going wrong or what I'm missing.
The fuel pump push rod doesn't seem to be long enough to reach the camshaft, I'm guessing i have mislaid another push rod or something as there is a gap between the fuel pump push rod and the camshaft.
Someone save my sanity please. Pictures attached
