I have been using Mannol 0W40 (7719) which meets 502 and 505 spec in my 1.4. It seems to suit the car nicely and has improved drivability from cold starts and the mpg. I was slightly concerned that the lighter weight would increase oil consumption but have found that is not the case. Originally I used Castrol 5W30 and then Fuchs before switching to 5W40. I change the oil approx at 6 monthly intervals. Annual mileage is under 8,000. 2002 9n with 130,000 miles on the clock.

For my part, I always use the specific 5W30 Motul, I too would like to change for the next oil change but I don't know if it is advisable or not...

I'm sure that 5W-40 was the one to use when these cars were bought in 2002, that was what I always used on a BBY petrol engine, not much difference between 5W-30 and 5W-40 though, in reality.
I always use 5W-30 on newer engines though, ie 2011 3.0TFSI, 2019 2.0TSI and 2015 1.2TSI.

What engine, mileage and driving conditions (local, highway, etc.)?
