Radiator fan and Relay.

Post by mirage »

My 1400 16 valve 2003 polo is overheating, the fan does not come on. I bridged out the temp. switch and only the smeller fan comes on. but not when overheating.

how do I test the fan relay ( big solid state type). and the bigger fan ( 3 wires ).

Any advice please.

Does your car have AC, one fan might be "dedicated" to this and not switched with the radiator thermo switch (screwed into the side of the rad), family owned 2005 (no AC) has a two speed cooling fan, switched from the thermo switch, don't think it has a relay, see settings, below.

VW Polo (Mar.2005)
Thermostat begins opening at 84C. Fully Open at 98C.
The Coolant Temperature Indication is ECU conditioned before display to read a steady 90C
between actual coolant temperatures of 75C and 107C.
Fan Speed 1 ON at 91C to 97C. OFF at 91 to 84C.
Fan Speed 2 ON at 99C to 105C. OFF at 98 to 91C.

I do have AC, and it also has a big relay under the battery which I think is suspect.
