Instrument Cluster Perspex Help

Post by ValleyForge »

Putting our red GTi into storage for a while and noticed the plastic cover for the instrument cluster has these marks on it. I tried headlight sealant spray (no difference) and then buffing the plastic with a Dremel - no improvement. I'm assuming it was caused by some solvent we used for revitalizing the trim; possibly even sunsceen.

Anyone have clever ideas or am I off to the wreckers for a whole cluster?

You can switch out the transparant front.
Just pay attention that you buy one with the mattsilver rings.
The one without will also fit but than you won't have the rings around the speedo and rev counter.

Replacing is easy.
Put steeringwheel in lowest position
Remove cover under the instrument cluster
Loosen the 2 torx screws (T15 or T20)
Pull out the cluster with caution
Release the 2 wire connectors on the back left and right

When you have it out, you wil see a number of clips that needs te be opened. Use a flat screwdriver to lift the clips up.
I used plastic trim removers to hold them open untill there are enough open so they won't clip back.
Then remove the front and switch it.

Reassemble in reverse.
Job done.

Thanks Maarten.

Strange coincidence, but the car is being stored because it's owner (son #1) has just moved to the Netherlands for work from Australia!

Glad to help.
That's coincidence indeed

Look on Ebay, buy the cheapest one with the rings (from factory on it) and make sure that the transparant part is pristine.
Doesn't matter which version you buy, they all fit.

Search for 6Q0 920 82x x (the xx are only for version of the options of the cluster and they are of no concern to you)
All fit of 9N and 9N3 (2001-2009) 6R does NOT fit!

Champion Maarten. 9N3 are fairly thin in the ground in AU so eBay will be the place to look.
Many thanks again.
