I find it difficult to not get distracted when at VW - R32's, Pirelli Edition Golf GTI's, fat V6 Toureg's & a nice candy white 9N Polo GTI (not a good colour in my book) so having a sensible conversation can be tricky... Actually having just re-read Verity's comment she is right, it is attached to the bottom of the manifold and not the heat shield, bugger...

Yes, I think you/we are right, i.e. it's got to be Heat Shield related... I am now questioning if it is one of these brackets that is causing this vibration, may get another opinion because if one of these brackets has broken surely the vibration I'm hearing wouldn't be that bad, it's only a bracket...

Having had a bit of welding already done on a couple of my exhaust brackets I was trying not to resort ...

Not your usual exhaust question but more one about the 'supports' that you can see when looking directly down at the manifold when you open the bonnet - you can't actually see this 'support' on the left hand side due to engine cover/cam belt cover and all the other gubbins on this side of the engine...

Just to come back on this noise, it transpired this was both the main bearings in the gearbox... Had the gearbox recon'd at the same time and the noise has now gone completely gone; the comment from my mechanic's gearbox specialist was 'I spend my life repairing VW gearboxes, especially GTI's...' Jo...

Good to see another GTI in Surrey :D i may have a black washer jet cover spare, will have a look tommorow, you can have if so . That'd be great if you have, have you fitted one of these before? Presumably the bumper needs to come off, to be honest I don't know if the actual washer jet is in the bum...

Could be your Airbag Slip Ring to me - mine is faulty at the 'mo and VW wanted £186 to sort it out during my last inspection service, I bet you can guess what I said! Worst case your airbag won't deploy in the event of an accident and I guess this may be an MOT failure...
