Thanks Alex, yes, figured both out. I bought a £7.00 cable from EBAY which provides some 'VAGCOM lite' functions, including resetting the warning light....all is well now ...

Just to add there appears to be no oil sprayed around the engine bay or rocker cover. The oil from the dipstick seems black and normal. I have not noticed any blue smoke etc and there is certainly no loss of power. The only sign of a potential problem is the gunge on the filler cap.
