Cool! Well, if I choose to keep the car I might replace it.
<edit>OMG 82 eur, maybe leather paint is a cheaper option</edit>

Re: My high mileage GTI
It was quite an easy job. It looks so much better now without that rusty fender!
I also removed the dirt cap on the other front wheel. A ton of mud came out. Cleaned it, waxed it. Too bad the wing on that side is also getting bad, but I haven't been able to find a good used one in LC9Z color so far ...

Is the beige leather version also available? (You know, the beige leather interior that supposedly didn't exist
)

Re: My high mileage GTI
I am replacing the rotten front wing. Seems like I've got to remove the bumper or is it enough to pull it slightly forward?
I remember seeing a topic here on how to remove the bumper, including pics. Can't find it anymore. If someone has a link, please post it.

Re: My high mileage GTI
I replaced the circuit board of the ultrasonic alarm sensor. The old one malfunctioned because from one of the sensor elements a small welded disc was loose. It caused the car alarm to trigger every few minutes.

Re: My high mileage GTI
Haven't done the dashboard job yet. Had to prepare a 98 Hyundai Excel for a friend. I drove the Hyundai for a week because the Polo was running on 2 cylinders. On acceleration the engine started to judder and then the ecu decided to shut down the nr1 and 4 cylinder and the lambda control. So I ...

Re: My high mileage GTI
Since I need to spray paint some parts, like the front wings, I would also like to paint the gauge cap. GTIs have this glossy part on the gauge cap, but not mine because in the past the dashboard was replaced after a crash.
Can I remove just this glossy part or do I have to remove the entire cap?

Re: My high mileage GTI
Don't bother anymore, I got it replaced today. Two hour job. Let's hope it fixed the starting problems. Couldn't see much about the inner parts of the ignition switch, but the outside hole was quite worn out. Maybe so much that it couldn't be turned around enough anymore to make contact sometimes.

Re: My high mileage GTI
I bought part nr 6N0 905 865. It's called ignition switch. I can find how-to's for the Polo 6N, but not for our 6N2. Can it be replaced without removing the steering wheel etc?

Garage found no problem, car starts perfectly.

So the cae has now become unreliable. Which in my case means it needs to be replaced, because I just can't have that.
There's just one thing I can do and that it is draw a power cable from the starter solenoid to a light bulb and tape ...

Re: My high mileage GTI
Tonight my starter failed on me. Not even a click. Battery full. So sounds like dead solenoid. Called someone to push start it and we drove it to a known nearby garage. Will call them tomorrow when they open. I'll use my aircooled vdub until it's fixed.

Re: Sloppy gearstick syndrome
So a whining 5th gear is a timebomb? It's not like it will just get louder in time, it means it can simply self destruct any time?

Re: My high mileage GTI
Yeah that's the thing. I'm doing 50 miles a day now, but in 4 months only 30 miles. I doubt there will be moments to turn it on. Mebbe for like half a minute or so.
