Sounds like a leak in the air line somewhere. I had this exact problem, pump wurring away and only sometimes locking/unlocking the doors. Traced the leak to the rod that locks/unlocks the petrol cap. You can remove the acctuator by opening the boot and undoing the two bolts that hold it in place ...

UPDATE
Hurray! Got it sorted :)
Traced the problem to the pneumatic actuator that locks the petrol cap. The pipe and connector were fine, but there's a rubber seal around the bit where the metal pin comes out of the actuator which had split. Some cunning use of insulation tape and a sandwich bag has re ...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was having a play with it yesterday and I can sometimes make it lock everything by pulling the petrol cap slightly whilst the pump is wurring :? It seems the pin that locks the cap does slide across when I press the plipper. Is there some kind of air seal around ...

Car won't lock all the doors!
My 16v is having a bit of a problem with the central locking. If I push the plipper or turn the key in driver's door to lock the car it doesn't work. I can hear a wurring noise behind the petrol filler cap, which I guess is the central locking pump(?) but none of the doors will lock; I have to go ...

16 valver - Broken gear stick linkage
I know the 16v is supposed to have a weak gearbox, but has anyone else had this?
The bottom of my gear stick has crumbled apart so is no longer connected to the pushrod that go into the gearbox. I can't select any gears :( Had to have the car towed to a garage to be fixed. Just wondering if anyone ...

What tyres are you currently on? I'm using Yokohama A539 which are very grippy in the dry (less so in the wet). Means I can pull out of junctions hard without spinning up the inside wheel. Mades a big different to cornering too.
The best tyres I've had on the car were Goodyear Eagle F1s, but they ...

I doubt it's the proper xenon HIDs (like Mercs and BMWs have) for only a fiver! You can get kits from here which are the real deal:
http://www.hids4u.co.uk
and work for most cars
Cost quite a bit more though!

I'm not convinced it's weather related as I've had the car over 3 years now and never had it drop this much. If it's not the battery, is there any other explanation anyone can think of? Perhaps an engine sensor failed when the battery was reconnected? The car's performance hasn't seemed to change ...

16v mpg dropped by 50 miles a tank
It seems after changing the battery in my 16v a month ago, the mileage I'm getting per tank has dropped from 350 miles to barely 300 miles :( Could this be because the battery change reset the ECU or perhaps just a coincidence? Any ideas as to the cause as it's now costing me more money each week to ...

Just because you've changed the thermostat doesn't mean the new one's working! I had one stuck open once on my kit car's engine and went throught three replacements until I got one that actually worked! Easy test is to drop it in a cup of boiling water. Watch it open and then take it out and make ...
