Hi, I’ve had this issue on my 9n3 and as said the spindles seize up ,i lubricated them but this was only a temporary fix.I ended up replacing the linkage with a new genuine part .


How long did lubricating them last for and what did you use? I’m having the same issue so it would be useful to ...

Thanks. Turns out an Allen key does the job just as nicely

So after some dismantling and a bit more research I bought a new latch mechanism and this was the problem.

Does anyone know the size of the 12 spline bolts holding the latch mechanism in place? I'll need to buy the right one as i don't have a set!

Could be broken wires between the tailgate and the body. Check inside the rubber gaiter that runs between the two

That's the sensor. It's massively awkward to get to!!

The starter can normally be moved around. Yours might have a bracket attached on the back

Right. Undone the 3 bolts, but I'll be buggered if I can move the starter motor any further out of the way that this! Not being able to see down the back of the engine isn't exactly helping to see what's stopping it from moving!

Thats the bolts. There is a nut on the back though so be careful.

So with reference to the three main bolts, I was expecting to see at least one bolt on the starter motor side. However all three seem to be as follows:

These two bolts had the plastic cable guide clipped onto them and are on the 'battery' side.

It is a DIY job, but a little fiddly and you need some event decent sockets and scanners for access.

The starter motor has to come out from the back of the engine, then the sensor just unscrews from the back of the block under where the starter goes into
