You also need it by actually measuring how much lower the car is rather than believing the spring manufacturers.

Mine is on 40mm PI springs and it is as low RR Livi. I did have 60mm drop springs but the car was riding with the body resting on the anti-roll bar and the arch was lower than the wheel ...

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking it looked a lot lower than 60. I am running 185/55/14 tyres so they are the right size. Serves me right for buying a cheap kit (£170 for shocks/springs) from an eBay advertiser I suppose!

I already have some 40mm springs that were on it before, and are back ...

I'm only using 14s. It is the nti roll bar that is pressed against the bottom of the car and then moving away from car and hitting back into it that is the problem, not the wheels.

Maybe the anti roll bars are positioned differently on different models? Mine is a 1.6 auto hich I guess many people ...

Think I have found what it is. The anti roll bar is now resting against part of the car. So every time I go over a bump the car raises and lowers so the bar knocks the car.

Does this sound dangerous or is the worse case the underside of the car developing a bit of a dent?

Might raise it back to 40 ...

Lowered too much - side effects

Hi, I have just changed the shocks and springs to bring the car down 60mm. The front looks very low, can't even get a finger between tyre and arch.

When driving the car it makes noises that almost sound as though the wheels are loose! I have checked the wheels and all bolts on the suspension and ...

Mine actually feels quite comfortable at 60. Only changed them over this morning. Funny sounds (gentle knocks when on bumpy roads) coming out from the front though but they are fitted properly as I have rechecked. All done up tight. Does your make any noises or is it as quiet as on standard height?

Well I've learnt from my mistake. I changed just the springs and am now spending more money buying a complete kit which I wish I had done in the first place. Some people may say you don't need to change the shocks but I would put that down to not knowing how a good handling/riding car should feel ...

Standard shocks are matched to the standard spring and work against the stiffness of the standard spring. If you shorten the spring and also increase the stiffness the standard shock is a) working in a different range as it is as though the car is already 40 mm through it's travel before it has even ...

I have had A LOT of cars and I would compare the MK 4 Polo to a BMW in terms of build quality and finish. Most hatchbacks don't come close.

The engines are however a bit dull and the standard handling is crap.

I have got -40 PI springs on mine and it is almost as comfortable as it was on normal springs, hard to notice any difference unless hitting a very bad road surface.
Previous cars I have lowered have always got noticably less comfortable, but not the Polo on -40 PIs.

I recently lowered mine by just 40mm and the shocks are not up to the job of controlling the spring. It's stays flat around corners but doesn't handle bad roads at all well as it bounces of the spring without an upgraded shock. waiting for my shocks and springs to arrive so I can change the lot ...

I got one off eBay for £20, postage was £10 though!

Seems to be made well enough, fitted straight on.

I've got a mark 4 (1997) and it has push type repeaters. Just need a push to the left and they come straight out.

Thanks for the replies. I know the nuts will be easy to get off, as I said above they have all been off in the last few weeks when I had the springs changed.

As it has 40mm springs on it at the moment, with normal length shocks, I am hoping the springs may not even need to be compressed on removal.
