Anyone ever changed one? Do you have to move the alternator out of the way to get at the bottom bolt on the housing?

tdi overheating
I have a 2000 1.4 tdi polo and recently it has started getting hot. I checked and there is no heat in the car suggesting an airlock or something stopping circulation. Anyone have any idea where the thermostat is or if there is anything i can have a look at to try and remedy this?
