Definately go down the Citizens Advice route and involve Trading Standards, buying from a trader definately gives you rights to protection.

Heard the same, they make in batches and when that batch is sold out you have to wait for the next batch, not sure on time between batches though.

Speak to VW customer services, they were replacing them FOC a while back as a goodwill gesture due to alot of failures on certain ones.. Reading the thread on Edition 38, the dealership in Shrewsbury sound like they are pretty good at honouring the warranty, maybe worth traveling that little bit extra to see if they are as good as folk say they are.

Not sure if your registered on the Edition 38 forum, as there is a thread on there about VW 12 years corrosion warranty with peoples different experiences encoutered at various dealers.
