Curries shouldnt have taken it out, I used to work at halfords and was told we could be liable if such a thing happened. Try and get them to pay

Not sure but some car shops might be able to do it for you, worth a try

Sounds like you left the batteries out of the remote for too long, resulting in the memory being wiped.
You will need to have it reprogrammed, costs a s**t load from VW as well
