The problem with the "my mate's mate" stories is they're often partly hearsay and tend to gloss over details.
I can give you details about the 2002 1.2 Polo - the fact that they didn't bother clipping the rear washer hoses together to stop them popping open and filling the boot with washer fluid ...

Re: 9n polo reliable/costly?
We had a 2002 1.2 9n for a year. Worst car in the world. My advice would be, if you really are going to listen to all the "my mate's mate's polo has been to the moon and back" posts is steer well clear of early model year 9ns (2002, 2003), and don't go anywhere near the 1.2 engine unless it's a lot ...

Re: VW 10 Year Rust Garentee?
Before we got shot of our (hated) 02 Polo, a small bubble appeared in the paintwork right on the front of the bonnet. It was easy to see there'd been no damage there - no chip or imperfection in the paintwork itself - just something nasty bubbling up from underneath.

Re: Is the polo reliable
well my brother has had many vauxhall all cost him lots of money. his mk4 astra ran him up a bill over a year of more than £1000 then still need more work
The Polo cost us the same if not more over the year, it also cost the previous owner a similar amount the year before (when the timing chain ...

Re: Is the polo reliable
That was a smart choice of next car (VX Astra), most people despise VX but when it comes down to "£ and ease of ownership", I think that all the smart motoring pundits have missed the point - they are cars first and if used as cars instead of icons then you will have a different view of things ...

Re: Is the polo reliable
I think its a case of a few people are unlucky. You hear enough horror stories but there are enough people with good experiences.
And with a few exceptions this is always the case for every car!
It's more than that with the 9N Polo, sadly. We had the horror stories with the engine but we also had ...

Re: Engine Cooling Fan Issue
As above, not sure that the fan never coming on is necessarily a good sign, there is a reason why it's there. I was quite pleased to hear ours coming on recently when sat in traffic on a hot day (it also stayed on for a minute or so after we parked up later) - this is perfectly normal and just shows ...

Re: Does your 9N 1.9 TDI - Have Door/Puddle lights??
I can confirm we've got the puddle lights on our (3 door) 1.2 model on an 02 plate. On the downside we haven't got a bootlight, which I think may have been added later? All seems a bit random really.

Re: Is the polo reliable
We bought a 2002 1.2 privately last September and have been VERY unlucky with it. It had around 60,000 miles on the clock, full service history, and we knew when we bought it that the timing chain had already jumped and been replaced with a new tensioner (a common problem on these engines) which we ...

Re: Serious Problems Guys
I don't think we'll be using the AA again on our 1.2 Polo. We had a few problems earlier in the year and called them out twice, and on both occasions (from two different AA people) their computer wouldn't connect to the car and they could only offer us vague guesses about what might be up.
The ...

Ah, okay, that explains I guess. Does seem a little overactive, but I guess it knows what it's doing! Thanks all.

Electrical (servo?) noise from rear of car
This is a really weird one, and since it's been happening since we got the car in September with no apparent ill effects its probably not worth worrying about for a second, but I just wondered if anyone could satisfy my curiosity on this one.
The car is a 2002, 1.2S Polo, with most of the extras (e ...

Yup during wet road conditions they tend to make less or no noise for an unknown reason.
But yes it is definately the bushes and should be replaced by either ...

JUV< did you do it ? :?:
Sorry no, not yet anyway, I had a look but the wiring etc in the back of ours didn't look much like the pictures and it was obviously going to be a bit of an involved job, and possibly more trouble than it was worth... to be honest it's kind of been pushed down the list a ...

Re: Emissions Light and EPC Diagnostics
Actually if you give your local dealer a ring, they should be able to tell you from your car's registration whether it's had the latest update, without charge. Our independent VW mechanic suggested we get our ECU updated at one stage when he had doubts about the engine idling (which later turned out ...
