as the title says, my gearbox makes an irritating whining noise at 40mph in 4'th. It whines in 5'th too, but the road noise helps to drown it out (you have to be grateful for small mercies sometimes). I did a search and found an old thread, ca. 2007, on the same topic, but it petered out ...

Is this common? The dealer said they had to remove the rear bumber to replace a rubber grommet that had split. I asked them if that meant the car had been hit at some point but they said it didn't look like it; the grommet had simply perished.

Is it common for Polos to spring leaks? Mine is only 18 months old, so I'm a bit surprised at having this problem. Does the Polo have an overboost facility? The Mondeo had 243 lb-ft as standard, but if you mashed the throttle to the floor it would give another 15 lb-ft. Probably why my clutch was on its way out.
