does it try and start and then stop, or is the starter running and cutting out or even running at all?
the starter is working fine, but the car will only start for a fraction of a section, maybe one or two firings, then no more, even when i keep the key turned for the entire time.

when you said it was getting lazy was it cutting out/slowing the whole car down ?
Lost pretty much all power in each gear changing down, I pressed the clutch before it would stall and it cut out anyway
...check if your fog light warning light on the dash shows up randomly...
No warning lights ...

Hey guys
My faithfull old mk4 had an 'episode' today, it lost nearly all power and eventually cut out and refused to restart!
Doing motorway speeds for 20 mins then 40 on an A road for 10 mins and it got lazy in fifth, i dropped to third and still no response so pulled in,

Hey, I got my distributor cap off a while ago and replaced cos it was knackered and causing bad misfiring, but while the cap was off I noticed the rotor arm was fairly busted lookin too.
I have tried pulling the arm off, twisting it loose, and wd40'ing the hell out of it but it wont budge!!

kevsnell, or anyone interested,
changed the temp sensor: no difference ( just reads 11deg warmer [90deg at normal now] and gets to 90deg much quicker)
Changed distributor cap, which was fairly corroded, SORTED!! and sanding the ends in the cap made no difference to the problem.
Its driving perfect ...

yea i've got the exact same problem recently! (98 mk4 1.0L 120K)
For me it will only occur on a cold start after rain. it will take a fraction longer to start the engine, then it shudders for a second or two but will pull away fine, then after maybe a quarter mile, pulling off from lights, it will ...
