yeah i know it is weird. and kinnda annoying. least we caught it intime before it did damage. the only thing i can think of is it makes it easier to replace small sections if something goes wrong rather then a bit of the pipe perishing and having to replace the whole pipe. vw being thoughtful perhap...

My boyfriends gti is 140bhp at the wheel i cant remember all the things hes done to his but ... ive got a similar problem i have a W reg se and my passenger side barrel seized and wont work. the other day my drivers side started going stiff. but my boyfriend gave it a grease and its working fine again. as for remote central locking yeah getting remote central locking will help save your barrel...
