Stereo Replacement MK4 Polo

Post by OtherBarry »

Hi Everyone.

I'm in need of some advice when it comes to replacing the stereo on my 2002 MK4 Polo. I'm fed up with the poor audio quality you get from a cassette adaptor and would like something with DAB radio and a AUX input.

I'm reasonably handy, and so would like to give replacing the stereo myself rather than pay someone else to do it for me! However, it doesn't seem like it's quite as simple as remove the old one and plug the new one in, and from my research so far it looks like I'll need a few things:

1) VW Facia Panel Adaptor (SingleDin Facia) - because it seems like the old stero isn't the standard single din size??
2) Wiring Harness Adaptor Lead
3) ISO Aerial Adaptor
4) Removal keys - to get the old stereo out
5) New stereo (duh!) - one like this would be spot on http://www.halfords.com/technology/car- ... car-stereo

I've found a kit that has the first four parts included on eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Polo-MK4-F ... SwhglTwdBN) would that be the correct one?

Is this all I need to replace the current stereo? Any pointers (including any stereo preferences) would be really appreciated!

Many thanks

The radio is standard DIN size. You'll need a single universal pocket to go in the second gap.

You'll need a radio adapter to convert fakra to what the new radio has fitted

Bear in mind if you have the RCD radio instead of beta or gamma you'll need a quadlock to ISO adapter as auadlock won't fit aftermarket radios.

That kit is fine if you have an RCD radio. Being a 2002 though it's probably just a Gamma which already has ISO connectors and an ISO aerial so you just need the shelf and an ISO aerial adapter which maplins sell for a few quid

Thanks for the speedy reply! :)

I've taken a pic of the radio, and it looks like a gamma model: http://i.imgur.com/MU5smN4.jpg

So are you basically saying that I need:

1) A "shelf" - I don't know what you mean by this, sorry! Can you link an example for me?
2) Aerial adaptor - again can you link an example please?
3) New stereo

Many thanks again!

The pocket you have is already ok

All you need is the keys

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... reId=10001

And This adapter

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... reId=10001

The blue wire connects to the aerial power wire that comes out the new radio adapter loom that comes in the box

Hi,

Hopefully someone can confirm that what I want to buy is right, as I read somewhere else about the stereo needing a powered output for the aerial. I don't know how to tell if this stereo has one.
Pioneer DEH-X8700DAB http://www.pioneer-car.eu/uk/products/deh-x8700dab

And all I will also need to make the aerial workwith a DAB stereo is an aerial splitter.

and the removal key

its a 2003 Polo

Ok so this has not worked.
The splitter only converts the FM aerial and has nothing to do with DAB radio.

from what I can tell I need something like this- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/29174633 ... pla&crdt=0

Your new radio shouldve come with a dedicated DAB aerial which is the preferred route. FM aerials will not provide a particularly good split with DAB signal.

The problem is that your car aerial is amplified and the splitters generally dont work with amplified aerials

As per the listing
Please note: this item will not work if your aerial is amplified. Amplified or active aerials are usually either bee sting style, built within the glass, shorter than 50cm (although not always the case), have a spiral outer core and have a power supply cable. Please check with your vehicles handbook to establish before ordering.
Would be better to get one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pioneer-AN-DA ... 0830974058? and stick it down the corner of the windscreen

Apologies - i misread your previous post about the splitter.

Hi Other Barry,

Just wondering after all this time how you got on with the pioneer unit?
Just got a MK 4 for my daughter and we are looking at this unit.

All tips and info gratefully received.

Cheers.
