Car starts then instantly dies.

Post by Hamza mostafa »

Hi there,
I have a question and I hope that you guys are able to help me. I bought a VW polo 6n2 1.4 mpi year 2000 and I fitted a new exhaust on it. However before I fitted the new one on, I ran the car straight piped for 2-3 weeks, the car has a SORN, no insurance or tax as I am working to get it road worthy. When I fitted the new exhaust on it ran great, it was quiet and smooth. I have not yet fitted the lambda sensor yet. However when I parked it to the side, i found my key came to pieces in my pocket and I put it back together and the car would not start. So I went to Volkswagen themselves and I bought a new battery for my key in hopes that my car would start. But that I not what happened unfortunately. It wouldn’t start and it still doesn’t start. Could it be that it’s the lambda sensor needing fitted to help the car start even though it ran without the sensor for 2-3 weeks? Hope you guys can help!! Thank you!!

It's not the lambda connections it sounds like the immobiliser. The batteries are only needed for remote unlocking, not starting.

Do you have a code reader to see what codes are stored ?

Inside the top half of the key is a little chip. If that has gone missing the immobiliser will not allow the car to start. It's a little chip that is read by the reader coil near the ignition switch.

How many keys do you have ?

Hi thank you for replying, I have only one key and the chip is missing from the key, I have only 1 key. I don’t have a code reader but I’m getting it towed to a garage so they can sort it!!

Did you have the chips in your keys when it happened?

So all I need to do is buy the chip and have it coded? How do I find the code when I don’t have a code reader? Sorry about all the questions[emoji51]

If you had another key I think you can clone the code. Maybe with the right gear a garage can read what key is required, you might be looking at a new immobiliser ECU with matched chips.

Search your pockets and down the car seats to see if you can find the chip that dropped out ?

Otherwise, see what the garage say now.
