New stereo install - wiring

Post by littlepolo »

In the middle of a Android head unit install. Replacing OEM stereo.

The correct type of connector blocks are supplied with the new unit but the wiring does not line up with the original.

Do I need an adapter or can I jump some of these wires/pins?

Also installing a new DAB powered antenna that needs 12V. Can I take if from the car connector block?

Not sure what happened with the images. The first two are the existing car connector and the last is the new stereo connector.

The new radio needs an ignition live. You need to cut the red wire on the radio side unless it’s on a connector you can remove and feed a 12V ignition live to this.

I got an adapter for a few Pounds and completed the job.

When I put the ignition on the new head unit powers up. If I power it down (long press of the head units power button) at next cycle of the ignition key it powers up again. The OEM stereo did not do this. I cannot find a setting to change this. Did I miss something?

Is it losing its settings too? You need to make sure your adapter has provided an ignition live as well as a permanent live and not made it so it’s ignition only

It is not losing settings but it won't power up with the ignition key out of the lock.

I bought an ISO converter cable to save chopping wires. I'll check it over at the weekend to see what power is going where.

Do you feel like perhaps the ignition live and permanent live may have been switched around?

Would that result in the symptoms described?

1) Stereo powers up at ignition on, defaults to FM and volume 15
2) Stereo can be powered up by stereo power button with ignition key in (not turned), retains setting if powered on/off by button with ignition key in but not turned
3) Stereo cannot be powered up by power button with key removed from ignition

Just to close this off in case it might help someone, the wiring was 'correctly' installed as in yellow from car to yellow on head unit and red from car to red on head unit. For some vehicles (e.g. VW) the wires need to be crossed. So red from car to yellow on head unit and yellow from car to red on head unit. On ignition key operation the head unit now resumes where it was set before (i.e. if it was off it stays off) and returns to the same source on power up.

Sorry to thread resurrect, but I don't suppose you've got the harness details?
I've got a similar issue with an aftermarket (Sony) H/U.

I can't be bothered to re-pin connectors, so I want an easy plug'n'play option.

A 2002 should be pre canbus and already have the correct wiring on the ISO

Is it a gamma or beta unit currently fitted?
