6N2 1.4 8v, Oil by throttle body?

Post by bewsh »

Today, I went to remove and clean the throttle body on the car. When I removed the air cleaner top cover of the engine and took a look at the throttle body and there was puddles of oil around it. I also noticed that the breather pipe (on the left of the air box) wasn't attached to the bottom of the engine and the pat which attaches to the bottom of the engine was split and someone had put duct tape around it in an attempt to secure it to the engine. Here are some photos to explain further...

Does anyone know how oil is getting all over this area? Obviously I'll need to replace the breather hose, does anyone know where I can get one of these?

My 8v used to hoof oil up in to the air filter thought the breather pipe which was knackered. I never replaced it as it was a heap so just duck taped it. Never really paid much attention after that but once I'd botched the breather pipe it never hoofed any oil through. Try replacing the breather hose and see what happens. As to where to get one, try VW.

Thanks for the reply. I've just ordered a new breather hose from Vw which comes in next week. I'll give the throttle body a good clean as well, and then check it for oil after driving it. If oil is still coming up afterwards, would you have any other ideas of what could be at fault?

Not really buddy, as I said I never went in to it much deeper than that as the hose seemed to solve. Has a service been done lately?

I only recently bought the car, but according to the service history in the book, it was last serviced towards the end of February. And a couple of weeks ago I got the timing belt and coolant pump changed, the garage probably broke the pipe then I'd imagine!

Nah it's common as muck for the breather pipes to go man.

VW said it was £16 for a new hose. I tried a few scrappies but none of them had the engines left, so VW was my only choice really.
