Software for adapting egr

I'm looking for advice on software for adapting egr valve after cleaning. Cleaning has changed the fault code (eml still on) however I believe it now would need adapting to find out if it just needs resetting or if the egr is at fault.
Want to know if it's worth paying for the software and cable myself or if it's better for me to find somewhere local that can do it for me.
