Steering Rack Leak :-(

Post by gerinemo »

Folks
I had a search through loads of topics on steering rack leaks here and Im still a little confused

My 2008 polo N93 has a leak
the Driver side tie rod boot fills with steering fluid and then leaks out
The old Rubber boot was damaged so I replaced it trying to slow the leak to give me time to get it sorted the garage cant fit it in for another 3 weeks but no joy
It emptied the reservoir in 3 days of just going down to the town

So Im on ebay trying to find a replacement rack ( not just a seal )
Is there a way to find the part number from the Vin but when I go on the eKTA site and put in the Vin it says not found
Is there anyone can tell me the part number from the following
I was just out under the car to see if I could find a part number on it but its pretty awkward

9N3 1W4
Polo A04 comfo
51 4v M5F
BZG- JUS

Any of the Racks i have seen on ebay look similar but seem to lean more of an angle where the motor housing is ( where it goes in to the car

Hi
You don’t say what size engine is fitted but from the codes supplied can I take it it’s a 1.2 12v ?

From memory I think they are all the same across the model range the only difference being the plug for the steering angle sensor .

Either a fixed wire or a plug in type

Thanks for the Reply
Sorry I did not post the Engine
A 3 pot 1.2 12V BZG

Sure the Rack is the TRW one with the green cap pretty sure I remember taking it off When I bought some fluid couple years ago
And rack has the Brown plug on it

I had a look on ebay and there was one for a 2009 but the part of the rack that has the motor / pump attached looked like it was at more of an angle if that makes sense than the one in the car

This one looks in good condition but wanted to be sure as the cost of trying to return it from Ireland would be quite expensive

Is it just the picture or is the ebay one leaning over more at an angle ?
Only other difference is that the ebay one came from a 3 door car where I have a 5 door 2008

Thanks again for your input :-)

Personally I would go for a re-manufactured unit over a second hand one ,just because you never know what mileage and or condition of the insides plus you will have some kind of warranty/ come back on the seller. Just my opinion

What about this one do you think it would work ?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLKSWAGEN-P ... GTR=1#shId

Says 2001 -2009 but polo 9n not 9n3

Cheers

Had no luck with the ebay seller
Just said to check the part number ( really helpful )

So took a trip to the local breakers and had a look at a few
Picked up one that they said is same checked for play and opened the rubber boots and no oil / fluid
The rods seemed ok with no play ( not flopping around ) but rather than have to do them later i went straight to the motor factors and got some new tie rods inner and outer
and have swapped them out

Will update with the part number once It is in and ok for future reference

For future reference
The scrapyard steering rack is in and appears to be working fine :-)

The part number stamped on it is TRW 023 0080 050 001 which when googled comes up as polo 9N

Paid €90 for the rack
€40 for inner and outer tie rods ( even though I could prob have gotten away with the ones that were in it )
€180 for the local garage to fit it as our driveway is gravel and a real pain to do anything under the car ( + i'm just getting too old )
€60 for tracking

So a lot of money to spend on an 08
but looking around at replacing it with something else within our budget of about €4.5K the best I could have got was about a 2012 here in rip off Ireland
and many of which had the same mileage as the current one

Importing something from UK has been knocked on the head now with irish government introduced a new NOX tax as well as the dreaded VRT ( vehicle registration tax )
I think importing from Northern Ireland / UK is a thing of the past with 6k in taxes added on to a 2015 family car

So a kind of better the devil you know job and drive it till it dies
