firstly just new here happy to find this forum, history, bought a 2007 1.4se polo for my sons first car, weve just this weekend done cam and drive belt, new plugs, and all filters, before this work, car idle was about 1200 then it would settle, then up again, i cleaned throttle body with carb cleaner, now idles lovelly but engine management lights on, and it smokes a wee bit, im an old school mechanic, dont have code readers and stuff, any idea what i could have done and how do i clear the light?
only other fault is a rusty sump which we wire brushed up, but it must be rusted through as now leeks, so looking for a new one, ive temporarily repaired it with a mix of body filler with a lot of hardner in it.
car running great good power and smooth, just the managment light.
on the sump issue the car is a BUD engine, will any 1.4 sump fit or does it have to be from a bud engine?
thanks in advance if any of you guys can help out.

Try this website for parts number compatibility:- https://ifinterface.com/page/page3.php?langid=2 click onto CarProg2 and take it from there.

You really do need to get a scan tool, a VAG specific one but only for that age of car so it should be cheap, from ebay.

Guessing what/why that light is on is no good and could get expensive on parts replaced unnecessarily.

That scan tool will come in later as well.

Typically you want one that only covers VAG cars, and it typically cover Engine + ABS + SRS + Auto Trans.

This one sounds like it is for VAG cars, so maybe better than other just "cover all" marques.

Like everything else not 100% definite as I have not bought that version.

From memory, the OBD2 port is roughly in front of the driver's seat, no panels need to be removed - ie it can be seen through an opening in the "knee pad" area.
