5W 30 Oil in a 94 1.0 Bready

Post by Richiecole »

Hello, just a very quick question, I’ve just had the bready services and been informed that they’ve filled it with 5W 30 oil! My question is will this do it any damage at all? Thanks, Rich.

Not likely to do any damage as such in the short term, especially if it meets VW specification (for that vehicle). I'd guess that a 10W40 (semi synthetic) is probably the specified weight. A thinner oil might risk leaks in an older/higher mileage vehicle as well as the possibility to increase oil consumption. Do you recall what was in it before? If current oil does not meet VW spec recommended to drain and fill with correct specification. Otherwise monitor levels and change to correct weight at earliest opportunity.

Thanks littlepolo for the response,if I’m honest I’m not sure what grade oil was in it before the oil change so I’ll go ahead and drain it out and replace it with the correct specification at the weekend. Thanks again. Rich.

5W30 in an older engine such as this can cause a variety of issues as its too thin such as piston blow by, seepage via the valve stem seals etc.

10W40 is best, 5W40 if fully synth is your flavour, but semi synthetic is more than adequate
