Oil Pressure warning light

Post by Leah22 »

Hello! Brand new to this forum because I need some help.
I’m having issues with my oil pressure light have have been for around 9 months. I have a Polo Match 2012.

I first noticed it coming on whenever I got off the motorway, it would flash & beep around 3 times then go off again and that was it.

It started happening more so it went in the garage. I’ve since had two new sensors, new switch, and a brand new oil pump, but it keeps on happening. Thankfully the engine shows no signs of not having enough oil, car runs absolutely fine with no strange engine noises and no changes. And it still beeps and flashes about 3 times then goes off.

It’s definitely triggered by the change in my RPM, but not just motorways now.
It’s never on when I first turn on the car, it’s just after I’ve been driving for a while, but some journeys I won’t see it at all. Those tend to be the around town trips where my speed and RPM stay consistent. Last night driving up and down some steep hills and it came on a lot. If I keep my RPM the same that tends to stop it but that’s not always possible.

The last garage I took it to ran a diagnostics and said they weren’t sure, they thought it was likely an electrical fault but would have to look at it in more detail, half a day at garage £120, an electrical test £150, but that still might not be it.

I’d rather not spend £100’s more on it to still not have it fixed - so please, I need advice!! Can anyone pin point what they think the issue could be? Has this happened to you before?
It’s going to have to go into the garage as sadly, as some might tell from this post, I’m no mechanic. I realise that will be costly but I just want it diagnosed and fixed.

Thanks

Can you tell us exactly which engine is in this car and the car's age please.

If it is the earlier 1.2TSI 8V petrol engine with a chain driven camshaft, the lower than normal oil pressure could be due to an extra oil filter seal being in the oil filter head.

I'm guessing that a garage would have temp fitted an oil pressure gauge to prove there was an oil pressure issue before replacing the oil pump, if not then what sort of game were they playing.

Thank you so much for replying!

1.2 (70ps) Match Hatchback 1198cc Petrol.
It’s a 62 plate.

I’m not sure that was done at the garage, when the light was still coming on after two sensor changes the garage told me the next step would be to see if a new oil pump fixed the problem so I took their word for it and got one... and it didn’t change anything so I didn’t go back.

Hence why I’m so annoyed I’ve been throwing money at this with no luck!

What would you suggest I need to go to the garage and ask for?

Are you noticing any other instrument lights coming on or gauges changing their readings when this happens, just in case it is an instrument pod problem.

I'd feel very uneasy driving around with an oil pressure warning light coming on especially as it is coming on at lower engine revs, can you take this car to a VW Group Independent place as they should know these cars a lot better and get straight to the root cause of this problem, what sort of garage first worked on this problem?

No, nothing else has been coming on and no gauges changing. It will come on when revs drop below 2000 rpm, so I try to stay in a low gear.
It does make me feel uneasy - always afraid it will come on one time and not go off.

Yes I can try a VW garage, I was a bit afraid of the cost involved with that before, but maybe I should have just gone to one in the first place. The garage I went to originally was just a small independent one close to where I live, just out of ease. Not a VW specialist.

Lots of people have told me to just trade it in and get rid, but wanted to have a try as it’s a lovely car otherwise. Can’t keep throwing money at it though!

Thanks for you advice.

I am having the same issues right now after i changed my engine oil..After servicing i drove a few meter from the workshop the oil pressure light came up in low rpm..when i speed up to 3000-4000rpm its fine..i drove at the highway at the speed more than 100kmh its fine..but when i slow down to low rpm its pop up again the light..

When you turned off the engine and start it again, the rattling sound very bad for a while then its gone.. its happen when i start my car only in the morning..now it’s happen every time i start it..

I went to VW SERVICE CENTRE they asked me to pay 150myr for diagnosed my car..the result came out was not even affected the oil pressure pump or anything related to the oil pressure issues..they had solved they issues after resetting my car according to the mechanic and should be no issue..

I drove my car from the SC after 5km the indicator pop up again..Something is not right..i felt that VW SC just robbed my money..next day i went to workshop they asked me to changed the engine oil..and the same thing happened..

What should i do right now? Can anyone help me on this please.. Thank you!

What age is your car, or to put it another way, which 1.2TSI engine is in it, is it the chain driven camshaft engine with the turbo at the front, or the belt driven camshaft with the turbo at the cabin side of the engine?

If it is the chain camshaft version, you might need to replace the oil filter, and when the oil filter has been removed, make sure that you have removed any extra O-ring seals and if the previous oil filter seal is still in that car, the filter does not get fitted correctly and causes this problem.

Edit:- after removing the oil filter and finding extra O-ring seals and removing them, you will need to buy and fit a new filter.

However, I already changed the new genuine oil filter today and the problem is solved..the previous filter im afraid was a not genuine but they claimed as genuine original product..

Thank you RUM4MO.. really appreciate it..😀

You are welcome!

Just remember the potential issue with leaving the previous filter's sealing O-ring in when ever you replace the oil filter.
